Darkside Johnny Rocks

Hello, Rock and Roll Universe!

Welcome to Darkside Johnny Rocks – where the spirit of rock never fades, even if my guitar strings did for a while. I’m Darkside Johnny, a name inspired by the iconic echoes of Pink Floyd, and yes, I've been away from the guitar for a bit – 12 years, to be precise. But here’s the twist, my absence was not due to a lack of love for the six-string; rather, it was part of an experiment to prove a theory as wild as the solos in "Comfortably Numb." You see, I've concocted what I like to call the "Unlock the Fretboard" theory, blending the Nashville Number System with the Minor Pentatonic scale. The idea? To make guitar playing as intuitive as riding a bike. You might have heard the saying, "You never forget how to ride a bike." Well, I'm here to test if the same holds true for guitar playing. Here's what you can expect from this blog: • Guitar Theory and Experimentation: I’ll be diving back into the world of guitar with fresh eyes, testing if my theory holds water. Can you really pick up where you left off? Let's find out together. • Rock Legends and Lore: From the psychedelic vibes of the '60s, through the layered anthems of the '70s, to the hair metal explosion of the '80s, I've seen it all. I'll share firsthand stories from concerts, the myths and legends of the rock scene, and the backstage gossip that made the rounds. • Cultural Critiques: How did these tunes shape us? What was the dialogue between rock music and society? I was there, observing and participating, and now I'm ready to share those reflections with you. • Revisiting the Classics: We’ll talk about the bands, the albums, and the tracks that defined an era. From Zeppelin to Sabbath, from Hendrix to Van Halen, every post will be a trip down memory lane. So, why am I doing this now? Because life, like rock music, is about timing, passion, and sometimes, a rebellious streak. After years of letting my guitar gather dust (not really, I'm too sentimental for that), I'm back to rock out, to prove my theory, and to celebrate the music that has been the soundtrack of my life. Join me on this journey as we explore, remember, and rock on. Whether you're a seasoned guitarist, a music enthusiast, or someone who just loves a good story, there's something here for everyone. Let’s see if we can ride this bike again, or in this case, strum those strings with the ease of muscle memory. Stay tuned, stay rock, and let’s make some noise together. Rock on, Darkside Johnny

Welcome to the Darkside of the Johnny: The Journey Begins

H ey, rockers and rollers, it's Darkside Johnny here, and yes, I might have just turned my 'About Page' into a bit of an accidental first post (thanks, Mary Jane, for the inspiration). But hey, in the spirit of rock 'n' roll, let’s roll with the punches. So, here we are, officially kicking off Darkside Johnny Rocks . The journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step, or in my case, a slightly misdirected leap. But that's rock for you — it’s unpredictable, a little chaotic, and always unexpected. What's Up Next? • The Guitar Experiment: I'll be sharing my journey back to the fretboard. Will the muscle memory kick in? Can my new theory make guitar playing easier for everyone? Watch this space for updates, and maybe, just maybe, some embarrassing re-learning moments. • Rock Tales : From the tales of bands like Led Zeppelin, who I swear once caused a tsunami of groupies with just one riff, to the time I saw The Who and thought my eardrums had...

What Is Perfection? A Midnight Meditation for the Broken-In Guitar Souls

Midnight Meditations 🎸 What Is Perfection? A Midnight Meditation for the Broken-In Guitar Souls By Darkside Johnny Perfection. People throw that word around like it’s a destination — like there’s a road that leads to some spotless, scratch-free mountaintop where the music is flawless and the angels tune your strings. But that ain’t Rock ’n’ Roll . Rock was born half-drunk, off-key, heartbroken, unapologetic, and barefoot on a barroom floor. It wasn’t meant to be pretty. It was meant to be true . Perfection Is a Ghost Try to grab perfection and it slips right through your fingers. It’s not a standard — it’s a shadow cast by intention. When you care enough to hit the truth dead-center, sometimes you brush up against perfection… but nobody lives in it. Musicians don’t chase perfection. They chase moments — those rare, electric seconds when everything inside you says yes . Beauty? That’s a Different Beast. If beauty really lives in the eye of the beholder, then nobody ...

My First Lesson in the Blues

My First Lesson in the Blues Judy in Disguise - with Glasses The first song I can really remember grabbing hold of me—like reaching out of the airwaves and planting itself inside my little five-year-old brain—was “Judy in Disguise (With Glasses)” by John Fred & His Playboy Band. We were living in St. Mary’s County, Maryland at the time, and my mom had stumbled on the album at a flea market. I can still see the way she held it up, the kind of casual treasure-hunting moment only moms could pull off. For me, though, that record was gold. I had my own little portable phonograph back then, and once that record dropped onto the turntable, I was hooked. I probably listened to “Judy in Disguise” a hundred times in a row, wearing out the groove and bouncing along in my own little world. The sound of that horn section, the playful lyrics, the sheer joy of it—it was my first taste of music hitting me right in the soul. And then came my first real taste of the blues. After one of those ma...
