Coming Back to Life on Guitar — Diatonic + CAGED πΈπΏ
Quick, straight-to-the-fretboard guide for your jam sessions. Learn the Diatonic (major) scale and the 5 CAGED positions so you can move freely across the neck — no fluff, only juice. ✨
What is the Diatonic Major Scale? πΆ
The 7-note major scale (Do–Re–Mi…) built from the pattern: W – W – H – W – W – W – H. Example: C major = C D E F G A B C (no sharps/flats). On guitar: whole step = 2 frets, half step = 1 fret.
Why this matters
- Chords are diatonic building blocks.
- Melodies and solos often live inside (or near) the diatonic fence.
- Learn this and you’ll improvise with purpose. π―
CAGED — Five Scale Positions (C Major example) π₯

B|--------------------8-10-----
G|-------------7-9-------------
D|-------7-10------------------
A|---7-10----------------------
E|-8---------------------------
5) D shape — high neck D-derived box
e|----------------------8-10-12-
B|----------------8-10----------
G|-----------9-10--------------
D|-----10-12-------------------
A|-10-12-----------------------

Practice Exercise — "Connect the Smoke Rings" π
- Play the C shape ascending slowly 4x (metronome 60–70 bpm).
- Without stopping, *slide* into the A shape and play descending 4x.
- Repeat: A → G → E → D, chaining each neighbor pair cleanly.
- Once comfortable, loop all 5 patterns up the neck and back down. Add a simple 3-note lick inside each box.
- Improvise for 60 seconds using only notes from the current box. Let mistakes be lessons — keep it soulful. π§
Pro Tips ✨
- Memorize where the root note is in each box — that's your compass (e.g., C at 3rd fret A string or 8th fret low E).
- Practice slowly. Speed chases bad habits. π ♂️
- Sing the note as you play it — ear + finger = fast learning. π€
